Events Leading Up:
Towards the end of the War of 1812, the British rampaged American Coastal Cities after America’s terrorizing acts in Canada. America or Britain didn’t need to win the war yet, but after a British attack on the American Capitol, Britain’s offensive strategy changed forever.
In the British attack on D.C, one of General Ross's officers, Officer George R. Gleig, reported, “all thoughts of accommodation vanished. The troops advanced into the town, having first put to the sword all were found in the house from which the shots were fired, and reduced it to ashes. They proceeded to destroy everything connected with the Government. They set fire to the powder magazine and it exploded with a terrible crash.”

The British planned to attack Baltimore because of Baltimore’s international trading community. Since Baltimore was an international port, French and British Ships could raid idle American Merchant Ships and their hurry to gain supplies to fight each other. These incidents convinced ships owners to transform their vessels into armed watercraft.
